Hokianga Inpatient Services
Acute Medical Hospital Service
Hokianga Hospital based in Rawene offers a ten bed acute care inpatient service for the residents of Hokianga. The 24 / 7 service is managed by the Hospital Services Manager and rural hospital medicine practitioners in association with registered nurses and multi disciplined hospital support staff. The service is provided under contract to Northland District Health Board and is one of the five public hospitals in Northland.
The hospital service provides assessment, treatment, monitoring and support for patients with acute medical conditions often associated with the exacerbation of chronic conditions such as cardio-vascular disease, respiratory illness, and diabetes. Hokianga Hospital provides an intermediate level of care as a locally managed enhanced primary care facility providing both step up and step down care for patients requiring a secondary level of specialist support, usually provided at the Whangarei Base Hospital. Inter-facility transport between hospitals is provided by St. John ambulance service or when required, the Northland Emergency Helicopter service.
Hokianga Hospital's registered nurses provide after-hours triage / intial assessment for urgent and emergency care. On call doctors are called in after hours to provide emergency treatment when required.
Hokianga Hospital provides a diagnostic radiography service available during working hours on referral from Hokianga Health clinical staff. The service is supported by Northland DHB's radiology service providing specialist diagnostic support. The service utilises modern digital X-ray equipment which enables fast transfer of images and allows for instant readings and diagnostic results in emergency situations.
