SCHOLARSHIPS

Hokianga Health encourages and supports local people to undertake training for careers in the health service.

Hauora Hokianga Scholarships

The Trust now offers three scholarships which can assist the payment of fees for medical, nursing or allied health students. These are the Dr G.M. Smith Medical Scholarship, the A.R. Cox Nursing Scholarship, and the Hokianga Health Trustees' Scholarship.

Application for these scholarships is open to a student already undertaking medical, nursing or allied health studies who either went to school in Hokianga or who has whakapapa links with Hokianga.

Our current scholars are:

  • Hamish McMillan, Trustees Scholar 2010

    Hamish graduated from Otago University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Physical Education and a BSc (Human Nutirtion) and is currently studying physiotherapy at AUT. Hamish is the inaugural scholar in the Trustees scholarship to assist students of allied health professions. He has strong family connections to the Waimamaku area of Hokianga. Hamish' essay on the integrated care/PHO model of health delivery provided by Hokianga Health won him the 2010 scharship.

  • Sonia Booth, A.R. Cox Nursing Scholar 2009 (and 2010)

    Sonia is now in her third year of study towards a Bachelor of Nursing at Otago Polytechnic. She is of Te Rarawa descent on her father's side, and was born and raised in Hokianga, attending Rawene Primary School. Her essay on the history and development of nursing services in the Hokianga and its relevance to modern day practice and the social environment won Sonia the 2009 Scholarship.

  • Dr G.M. Smith Medical Scholar

    No applications were received in 2009 for the Dr. G.M. Smith scholarship, and therefore there is no Dr. G.M. Smith Scholar for 2010

  • In addition we have a specific scholarship to provide support to St John volunteers who undertake training. This scholarship is only provided under the direction of the St John Ambulance Station Officer.

Maori Counselling Scholarships

Northland PHOS Ltd, through the Northland Primary Mental Health project, Te Pou Ora O Te Piringatahi, and in partnership with Te Rau Matatini, is offering four scholarships to the value of $5000 each which will be awarded each year to four Maori students who are studying towards a a degree or diploma in counselling. Candidates must be of Maori descent, be studying at a Northland institution, studying fulltime, and must be normally resident in the Far North, mid-north and Whangarei areas of Northland.
