Kāinga Āhuru Hokianga Housing Survey
What We Heard & What Happens Next
He Mihi
Ngā mihi nui to everyone who welcomed our volunteers into your homes and shared your stories. In 2024, Hauora Hokianga led a housing survey that was different from the rest. While we couldn’t promise repairs, we promised to come back with what we found and what we’ll do next. This pānui is part of keeping that promise.
How We Listened
From February to September 2024, 20 volunteers spoke kanohi ki te kanohi with 830 people across the Hokianga. Your kōrero shaped the Kāinga Āhuru Hokianga Housing Survey report and gives us a clear picture of what needs to change.
What We Heard (in brief)
- Unmet housing need is widespread: Too many whānau told us their current housing doesn’t meet basic needs.
- Homes are not consistently safe, warm, or healthy: Many described conditions that make it hard to stay well.
- Overcrowding is common: Shared spaces are stretched, putting pressure on daily life.
- Health is being affected: Housing stress is impacting tamariki, pakeke, and kaumātua — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
What We’ll Do
Our aim as a Trust is to advocate for meaningful change and build support systems so that every Hokianga resident has a safe, warm, healthy home.
Over the coming months we will:
- Partner locally: Work alongside organisations already supporting whānau with housing improvements.
- Pursue supply and affordability: Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop affordable housing and explore home-ownership pathways.
- Back repairs that make a difference: Design and seek funding for a programme to repair or improve existing homes where viable.
- Keep you informed: Share regular updates on progress, opportunities, and how to access support as it becomes available.
Our Commitment to You
This kaupapa is by Hokianga, for Hokianga. We’ll continue to report back, seek your input, and make decisions that reflect our community’s realities and aspirations. It’s our shared responsibility to meet these challenges with solutions that work for whānau, marae, and hapori across the motu.
Thank you to the 830 participants and our 20 volunteers — your time, honesty, and manaakitanga continue to drive this work.
Ka ora te kāinga, ka ora te whānau — when our homes are well, our people thrive.
Clear and timely communication is important to Hauora Hokianga.
We are actively working to improve our internal processes so that our messages are prompt, consistent, and accessible across all platforms.
