Our Midwifery Service
Our maternity service is delivered by a dedicated team of midwives, supported by skilled clinical and administrative staff. We provide 24‑hour midwifery cover to support hapū māmā and whānau throughout pregnancy, birth, and up to five to six weeks after the birth of pēpi.
Hauora Hokianga’s Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) services are fully funded for all eligible New Zealand residents.
You do not need to be enrolled with Hauora Hokianga to receive maternity care. However, you must live within our service area. If you are unsure whether this applies to you, our team is happy to talk this through.
Our maternity service is a primary care service. If complications arise, care is transferred in consultation with the obstetric team in Whangārei. Midwifery services are not provided at Te Kōtuku, Whangārei.
Ngā Wānanga o Hine Kōpū
Ngā Wānanga o Hine Kōpū is a two‑day kaupapa Māori antenatal programme for wāhine hapū. The wānanga delivers antenatal knowledge grounded in Māoritanga and informed by tikanga and mātauranga Māori, supporting wāhine and whānau to prepare confidently for birth and parenthood.
Birthing Facility
Te Ao Mārama is the birthing facility located at Hokianga Hospital. Upgraded in 2013, it offers a comfortable, welcoming, and supportive environment for birth.
The facility includes:
- Three private birthing rooms
- Ensuite bathrooms and kitchenettes in each room
- A birthing pool in one of the rooms
Whānau are warmly welcomed. A dedicated whānau room is available, and facilities are provided for a support person to stay following the birth.
Accredited, Safe, and Baby Friendly Care
Te Ao Mārama is independently quality‑accredited under the Health and Disability Sector Standards and is accredited under the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. These accreditations reflect our commitment to providing high‑quality, safe, and whānau‑centred maternity care.
