Food Garden Area
Our raised garden beds provide organic vegetables to our kaumātua and kuia in the Residential Care Ward, and to whānau in need across Hokianga. The maara are a teaching and learning space where all are welcome.
Underpinned by the concepts of Mauri Ora (healthy individuals), Whānau Ora (healthy families), Wai Ora (healthy environments), and Whanaungatanga (connection), our Maara Kai bring people of all backgrounds together for the larger purpose of giving back.
Together, we are growing our knowledge and use of the Maramataka (traditional Māori moon calendar). A seed bank adds to our community resilience. Using regenerative methods and companion planting, flowers brighten the beds throughout the year.
People swap plants, adding to the diversity and character of our maara.
